The Calgary Boxing Club (CBC) was started by a group of passionate and dedicated boxers. These gentlemen laid the foundation of a club that has withstood many decades and changes, yet consistently produced top level athletes. The origins of CBC was at the National Boxing Center trained by Mansoor Esmail. Mansoor's methods of training and coaching were influential for our own coaches at CBC and we still use his workouts to this day.
The first club was in NE Calgary and later moved to Firepark in 1993. Kevin McDermott, Terry Coveney, Dave Coveney, and John Rahalla were paramount in opening CBC and keeping it going through the early years.
In 1999 CBC moved out of Firepark and into Ogden. It would later move again to the Inglewood/Ramsay area. In the late 90's Rob Glenn, Terry Prescott, and Doug Cronk were managing the club and even hosted the Canadian Boxing Nationals in Calgary. It was said to be one of the best National events in Western Canada to date.
CBC has always been volunteer run and without the support of many people along the way we would not have been able to continue. There have been many board members, presidents, casino/bingo workers, and parents who all have all put time and effort into making our club successful. We sincerely THANK YOU and if we have missed your name on our list here it was not intentionally.
Currently CBC is located in the west downtown Calgary community of Sunalta. We are close to the C-Train and easily accessible from 14th Street or Crowchild Trail.
We strongly believe that we have one of the best coaching programs in Canada and have had great success with our Amateur athletes. This includes National Champions, Olympians, International accolades, and many regional victories. Please see our Achievement page for more information.
Our founding coaches were invaluable in teaching our boxers dedication, passion, and knowledge of the sport. We were so fortunate to have Mansoor Esmail and Kevin McDermott as our head coaches. They are truly legends in the boxing community and we hope you can learn more about them on our Legacy page.
